BookReco: The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth

I have never read this version of “The Gingerbread Man” by Jim Aylesworth until last April 21 during the Summer Saturday Storytime session at the Children’s Corner of the Cebu City Public Library (CCPL).

Aylesworth’s take on the classic story is a rhythmic masterpiece that is best enjoyed by children from two to about five years old.

As wonderful as gingebread cookies paired with a glass of cold milk, this book is all you need for a fun, read-aloud session as Aylesworth wrote the story with texts that are easy to remember. Nicholas has memorized the lines
No! No!/I won’t come back!/I’d rather run/Than be your snack!” before the library intern announced the end of the story.

This gingerbread man is growing on me — and I might as well end up baking the recipe found at the back this book should the repairman show up at the door today to fix the oven — as artist Barbara McClintock rendered this book perfect with whimsical illustrations found in every single page.

A series of fun scenes happen as the gingerbread man ran away from a couple, a butcher, an elegant cow, a muddy old sow and a bookish fox.

We went straight to the National Book Store to check out and buy a copy of this book but there was none.

Good news is: you can order it through Amazon and ebay! Be sure to check how much they are charging for shipping cost and double check if they deliver to the Philippines.

A copy of this is also available at the Children’s Corner of the Cebu City Public Library. But I think there is only one. If you happen to get hold of the library copy, please handle it with care.

Happy reading!
