Reading Maps

I did not make any New Year resolution this year. But I think I should… And my resolution should be: “I resolve to learn how to read maps, properly.”

My husband calls me a “world traveller”. Some friends call me “Dora the Explorer”. My mother calls me “laagan” (that could be translated as wanderlust). I have spent years of discovering and rediscovering places as early as age five. I love to travel and I am simply glad that I am married to another traveler.

But while I travel a lot, I cannot be trusted with maps. I cannot read it…properly. I am geographically challenged. Well I know what is right from left but when it comes to navigating my way through subways, metro lines, trains… I just cannot do it the right way. I will end up lost for a good two hours before finding and figuring out my way. I won’t be a good partner for Amazing Race. I can start a fire, I can cook, I can wash dishes and clothes, I can sing and dance but… I CANNOT READ MAPS. Not properly.

I am better with asking people the directions. Then, I know where to go. I “read” directions through people. So if they tell the wrong ones (directions), guess what happens to me. It’s fun most of the time – getting lost and finding my way back. But not advisable when you have a flight to catch.

I have been staring at maps for quite some time. Trying to read and find my way without directing our deux-person team towards the Lost Labyrinth. I told Jeff I will take the lead and navigate tomorrow. But it looks like he is not giving me a chance… Haha. Maybe not right now.

Here are photos taken by Jeff as I tried to be map-smart:
